At Fields Cadillac Jacksonville, we know that there are many moving parts in your Cadillac, and a lot can get overlooked. Cadillac service is of vital importance, but of the many different types of maintenance, your tires are one thing that can get lost in the shuffle.
Here’s a brief guide on how to measure your tires' tread depth.
What is Tread Depth?
Measuring your tires’ tread depth gives you an idea of how worn down they are. Here are some quick measurements to refer to when you're measuring your tire treads:
- 4/32-inch or deeper in the tire grooves: good
- 3/32-inch depth: sufficient, but prepare for replacement soon
- 2/32-inch depth: poor
The Penny Method
One way to measure tread depth is by inserting a penny into the tread groove of your tire. Turn the penny so that Lincoln’s head is upside down and facing your way. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, the tread depth is about 2/32 inches, which means your tire needs to be replaced.
The Quarter Method
Another way to measure serious tread depth is by using a quarter, in a similar way to how you’d use a penny. Insert the quarter upside down and with Washington’s head facing out. If any of the tire tread touches Washington's head, you have 4/32 inches of tread remaining and are in good shape.
Tread Wear Indicator
Most tires also have a tread wear indicator molded onto the bottom. You can find them in a few places on the very bottom of a tread; if the indicator becomes flush with either side of the adjacent tread, it’s time to swap out your tires.
