A dead battery isn’t just an inconvenience. At the wrong place or time, it can be unsafe too. Our Cadillac service experts at Fields Cadillac Jacksonville are outlining how to jump-start your battery so that you can be prepared.
Find a Power Source
Before you can jump-start your battery, you need another power source — another working vehicle — and jumper cables. You should also check your battery to make sure that it isn’t leaking or damaged. If it is, it isn’t safe to jump-start your vehicle and you should get help from a professional.
Get Prepared
To start, park both vehicles so they are facing each other as closely as possible, but make sure they aren’t touching. Turn both vehicles off, pop the hoods, and secure the hood struts.
Attach the Jumper Cables
Next, it’s time to attach the jumper cables:
- Connect the red clip to the positive terminal of the dead battery
- Next, connect the other red clip to the positive terminal of the working battery
- Then, connect the black clip to the negative terminal of the working battery
- Finally, connect the other black clip to an unpainted metal surface of your vehicle
Start the Working Vehicle
Once the jumper cables are secure, start the working vehicle and let it run for a minute or two. Then, try to start your vehicle; if it doesn’t fire up right away, let it charge for a bit longer. After a few minutes, remove the jumper cables in the opposite order that you added them. Ideally, you should drive your vehicle for about 15 minutes before turning it off.
