Investing in an electric vehicle is a great move that will reduce your carbon footprint, not to mention eliminate trips to the gas station altogether. Should you also invest in an electric vehicle charging station? What benefits are there versus a standard wall outlet?

Is an EV Charging Station Required?

If you don’t have the space or capabilities, an EV charging station is fully optional. You can charge your EV using a typical 110-volt outlet. If you have an outlet in your garage, then you can charge your vehicle without any additional equipment, but at a slower pace.

Benefits of an EV Charging Station

An EV charging station is also known as a level two charger. Various models exist and can range anywhere from $300 to $900. Professional installation is also required. The benefit, though, is that these chargers produce 240-volts of power, far more than you receive from the typical 110-volt outlet.

This drastically reduces charging time. A standard 110-volt outlet charges at a rate of three to five miles of range per hour. By comparison, a level two charger charges at 10 to 20 miles of range per hour.

As you can see, the benefit comes down to the charging time. A level two charger charges at about two to four times the speed.

Should I Get a Level Two Charger?

A standard wall outlet can fully charge your vehicle if you let it charge overnight. However, a level two charger may be a good investment for people who drive often and need a quick charge in between trips.
