There are many benefits to living in Jacksonville, especially during this time of year. While many other parts of the country are buried in snow, we get to enjoy a nice, mild winter. Because we rarely have to worry about freezing temperatures, our vehicles get to avoid any winter-related damage, particularly battery corrosion.

Although the cold can wreak havoc on your car battery, there are other reasons why it can die. That's why it pays to know how to jumpstart it, and our Cadillac service experts are here to help.

How to Jump Your Battery

Jumping a battery is relatively easy, as long as there is another car you can use for power. First, drive the working car next to yours so the jumper cables can reach both batteries. Make sure both vehicles are parked and turned off.

Then, pop both hoods and connect the red clip to the positive terminal in the car that isn't working. Connect the other red clip to the positive terminal on the working car. After both red clips are attached, take the black clip and attach it to the negative terminal on the working battery. Take the other black clip and connect it to an unpainted metal surface away from the dead battery.

Start the engine in the car with the working battery and let it run for a few minutes. Afterwards, turn on the other car. Ideally, it should start fairly easily. If it does, you’ll need to recharge the battery, so make sure to drive around for at least 20 minutes.

If the non-working car doesn’t start, perform the above steps again to make sure everything was connected properly. If it still doesn't work, it may be permanently dead, which means you’ll need a new one.
